The impact of the Part P regulation on the DIY enthusiast depends on they type of project being undertaken, some minor electrical projects are permitted within the home as follows:

1. Changing of existing socket outlets is permitted in all rooms excluding kitchen areas. "Important note when installing metal sockets additional earthing may be required"

2. Changing of light fittings as above.

Note the RCCD and earthing sections below outline the minimum requirements that should be present in all dwellings

 RCCD Protection

The fuse board type installation does NOT provide the minimum safety requirements of RCCD protection within the home. Therefore, additional sockets, lights and shower etc, can not be added to this type of installation.

Options available.

1. Periodic testing, identifies wiring faults, condition and safety deficiencies within the electrical system. If the results are favourable then the fitting of a new RCCD protected distribution board is advised, if not a full rewire may be necessary.

The above work requires notification therefore, a Part P registered company should be used

 Earthing Requirements

Both main services inlets "gas and water" should be earthed. In addition the bathroom metal pipe work should also be earthed.
